The steps, the video selfie that replaces the code, and the limits on a fresh profile
Instagram accepts sign-up by e-mail as well as by phone, and that is the first thing worth knowing: the number is not compulsory. It is worth taking one when the e-mail is already used, or when the platform asks for a phone itself. The second thing people run into: instead of a code, Instagram may ask for a video selfie, and no number passes that check.
The steps
- Get the number. Coverage and prices are on the Instagram page.
- Switch the sign-up form to phone and enter the number with its country code.
- Wait for the SMS code.
- Fill in the profile and add an e-mail: once the number is returned, the e-mail is the only recovery channel left.
Which country to pick
Coverage is middling: seven providers of ten at most, widest in Vietnam, Indonesia and Estonia. As everywhere, the floor of the price range means small pools and more heavily recycled numbers, which Meta is sensitive to.

What happens once the number returns to the pool
The account stays yours, but replace or remove the number in settings: otherwise an SMS recovery reaches whoever gets the number next. An e-mail plus two-factor on an authenticator app settles it more safely.
