How to verify a phone on X (Twitter) with a virtual number
Updated 2026-07-29
The steps, "this phone number cannot be used", and why X asks for a phone at all
X rejects numbers it reads as VoIP; the policy has tightened more than once, and the refusal reads "this phone number cannot be used" or the code simply never arrives. The phone is usually asked for after sign-up rather than during it — on suspicious activity, when unlocking an account, or to enable certain features.
The steps
- Get the number. Coverage and prices are on the X (Twitter) page.
- Open account settings and add a phone.
- Enter the number with its country code and wait for the SMS.
- Enter the code. Move two-factor to an authenticator app straight away.
Which country to pick
Coverage is good — up to eight providers of ten, widest in Finland, the Netherlands and Thailand. Since X filters ranges, the provider slack matters less on its own than as a way to try another destination quickly.
| What to look at | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Willingness to switch destination | A rejected range stays rejected; only another country helps |
| The provider count on the row | Up to eight of ten — attempts will not hit "out of stock" |
| Not the floor of the price range | Cheap pools fall under the VoIP filter more often |
When the code does not arrive
| Symptom | Cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "This phone number cannot be used" | The range is classed as VoIP | Change country; no SMS was ever sent |
| No SMS after 2–3 minutes | The form took the number but the code was not delivered | Wait for the automatic refund and change country |
| "Too many attempts" | An account or device limit | Wait; a new number will not help |
| Number accepted but the account is still limited | The restriction was not lifted by a phone | Phone verification is only part of what is required |
What happens once the number returns to the pool
The number stays in settings as a recovery route you no longer control. Remove it or replace it with your own, keep two-factor in an app, and save the backup codes.
In short
- X usually asks for a phone during checks, not at sign-up.
- The refusal precedes the SMS — retrying is useless, another country is not.
- Move 2FA to an app and save the backup codes.
- Take the temporary number out of recovery settings afterwards.
