The steps, the call fallback that cannot work, and what you lose with the number
In Viber the number is the user’s identity: you cannot register without one, and it is how contacts find you. A one-time number does the job, but the consequence is worth understanding: once it goes back into the pool, your entry in other people’s address books points at a number you no longer hold.
The steps
- Get the number. Coverage and prices are on the Viber page.
- Install Viber and enter the number with its country code.
- Wait for the SMS. If Viber offers verification by call, decline — such a call cannot reach this number.
- Fill in the profile. A name and a photo are all people have to recognise you by, given the number is temporary.
Which country to pick
Coverage is wide — up to nine providers of ten, widest in the Netherlands, Thailand and Brazil. Viber is far more popular in some regions than others, and a number from a country where it is actually used looks more natural to the platform.

What happens once the number returns to the pool
The account keeps working on the device, but re-registering becomes impossible, and the next holder of the number can register Viber on it — inheriting a contact that other people’s address books still label with your name.
