How to register WeChat on a virtual number
Updated 2026-07-29
The steps and, above all, why a number alone is not enough here
WeChat is the one service in this section where a number is fundamentally not enough. Since 2019 a new sign-up requires an existing user to vouch for you by scanning a QR code during your registration. Without that step no account is created, and neither the number nor the country can work around it. Read the next block before you buy anything.
The steps
- Arrange the person who will vouch for you first — that is the bottleneck, not the number.
- Get the number. Coverage and prices are on the WeChat page.
- Enter the number with its country code and wait for the SMS.
- Hand the QR code to your voucher and wait for them to scan it.
- Fill in the profile.
Which country to pick
Coverage is wide — up to nine providers of ten, widest in Vietnam, the Netherlands and Brazil. WeChat rejects numbers it reads as VoIP, so cheap destinations with heavily recycled pools are as poor a choice here as anywhere.
| What to look at | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Whether your voucher is ready | This decides the outcome, and it is not about the number at all |
| The provider count on the row | Up to nine of ten — there is slack for a retry |
| Not the floor of the price range | Recycled numbers are refused more often |
When verification stalls
| Symptom | Cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No SMS after 2–3 minutes | The number is read as VoIP | Wait for the automatic refund and change country |
| The code worked but sign-up stopped | The vouching step has not been passed | Nothing to do with the number: you need a qualifying voucher |
| The voucher is refused | They do not meet the conditions: account age, real-name check, recent vouching | A different person who does meet them |
| "This number is already in use" | A previous holder’s account sits on it | Take a different number |
What happens once the number returns to the pool
WeChat leans on the number for recovery more than most services. As soon as the account exists, attach your own permanent number or alternative sign-in methods — otherwise recovery after a sign-out becomes impossible.
In short
- A number alone is not enough: you need a voucher with a six-month-old account.
- Arrange the vouching first or the number is spent for nothing.
- No SMS means change country; a stall after the code means the voucher.
- Attach a permanent number as soon as the account exists.
