How to register WhatsApp on a virtual number

The steps, the seven-day trap left by someone else’s PIN, and what to do when the code never arrives
WhatsApp is stricter than Telegram: it filters out VoIP numbers, and when SMS fails it offers verification by phone call — which a receive-only SMS number cannot take. There is also a trap the other services do not have: if the number once had two-step verification enabled, WhatsApp can demand a seven-day wait. Here is the order to do it in, and what to do in each of those cases.
The steps
- Get the number. Choosing the country matters more here than in general-purpose messengers — see below. Prices per country are on the WhatsApp page.
- Install WhatsApp and enter the number with its country code. Check the digits against the ones you were given: a typo looks exactly like "no code arrived".
- Wait for the six-digit code. It appears in the interface where you took the number.
- Enter the code and set a profile name.
- Open Settings → Account → Two-step verification straight away, set a PIN and attach an e-mail address.
Which country to pick
WhatsApp filters the origin of the number more than the country itself: it rejects numbers from VoIP services and treats carrier-issued numbers like an ordinary SIM. The practical conclusion is the same as everywhere else — do not chase the bottom of the price range.

When the code does not arrive

What happens to the account afterwards
A WhatsApp account lives on the number, not on the device. As long as you do not log out it keeps working after the number returns to the pool, and linked devices connect while the primary phone is online. But anything that needs the number confirmed again becomes impossible — no SMS will reach that number any more.
- Two-step verification with an e-mail attached is the only thing that gives you a chance to recover access. Set it up immediately.
- Bulk messaging in the first days is the fastest way to get the account restricted.
- You can move the account to your permanent number later through "Change number", as long as you are still signed in.
What a one-time number is not for
It is built for one incoming code. It is the wrong tool if you need to keep receiving SMS on that number — confirming a login from a new phone six months later, recovering access after logging out, taking calls. That calls for a rented number with a term: a different product.
