How to create a Telegram account on a virtual number

The steps, what a fresh account cannot do yet, and what to do when the code never arrives
Telegram ties an account to a phone number, so a second account needs a second number. A one-time number solves that in a couple of minutes, but three things are worth knowing first: the code does not arrive on every number, a fresh account is limited for a while, and once the number goes back into the pool there is no way to recover access. Here is the order to do it in, and what to do about each of those.
What you need
- A device with Telegram installed — phone or desktop. Desktop is easier: two windows side by side, number and code visible at once.
- A one-time number from a country Telegram accepts. Prices per country are on the Telegram page.
- Five spare minutes. The number lives for 20, but the code usually lands in 10–60 seconds.
The steps
- Pick a country. Cheapest is not best — see the section on choosing one below.
- On mobile, open the side menu, tap the arrow next to your name and choose "Add account". On desktop it is Settings, the accounts icon, "Add account".
- Enter the number with its country code. Telegram fills the code in for you if you pick the country from the list.
- Wait for the SMS. The code appears in the interface where you took the number — no need to refresh.
- Enter the code and set a first name. The last name can stay empty.
- Immediately open Settings → Privacy and Security → Cloud Password and set one. The next section explains why that cannot wait.
Which country to pick
Prices differ several times over between countries, but price alone is a poor guide. The cheapest destinations tend to be small ones with little numbering capacity, where the pool is recycled more often — and the more a number has already been used for sign-ups, the more warily Telegram treats it.

Among the widely available destinations, the United Kingdom, Estonia and Germany are the ones people actually ask for most, and 8–9 of the ten providers carry them. The full list with prices is in the table on the Telegram page.
When the code does not arrive
This is the most common problem, and it is nearly always one of four things. Check them in this order.

What a new account cannot do yet
A freshly registered Telegram account runs with reduced rights for a while. That is anti-spam behaviour, not a sign that anything is wrong with the number. In practice it looks like this:
- You cannot message people who are not in your contacts first — the message lands in "requests" or is not delivered at all.
- Adding members to groups and channels is limited.
- Reports from a handful of users in the first days restrict a new account faster than an old one.
The limits lift on their own with ordinary use. Nothing speeds that up, and bulk messaging in the first days is the quickest way to make them stick.
What a one-time number is not for
It is built for exactly one incoming code. It is the wrong tool if you need to keep receiving SMS on that number: confirming a login from a new device six months later, taking codes from services you linked, using the number as a contact. That calls for a rented number with a term — a different product.
In short
- A second Telegram account takes a couple of minutes on a one-time number.
- Set the cloud password immediately, not later — otherwise there is nothing to recover the account with.
- No code? Change country rather than retrying the same one.
- A new account is limited for the first days; that is normal and passes on its own.
