How to register Signal on a virtual number

The steps, the PIN and its seven-day registration lock, and why coverage is thinner here
Signal still requires a phone number to register, even now that it has usernames — a username hides your number from the people you talk to, it does not replace it at sign-in. Three things set Signal apart: it treats VoIP-origin numbers more harshly than most services, it has its own PIN with a seven-day registration lock, and its coverage in our catalogue is thinner than that of general-purpose messengers.
The steps
- Get the number. Prices and coverage per country are on the Signal page.
- Install Signal, enter the number with its country code and choose verification by text rather than by call.
- Wait for the SMS. The code appears in the interface where you took the number. If nothing arrives in a couple of minutes, Signal’s own "resend" rarely helps — the cause is the number, not a delay.
- Set a PIN and store it. Signal cannot recover it: this is not an account password but the key to your data on their side.
- Add a username so the people you talk to never have to see the number you registered on.
- If the account is meant to last, move it to your permanent number right away: Settings → Account → Change Phone Number.
The PIN and the registration lock
A Signal PIN is not the SMS code. It protects your data on Signal’s servers and switches on the registration lock: while that is active, the same number cannot be registered again without the PIN. The PIN cannot be recovered — Signal does not hold it in a readable form.
For a one-time number that cuts both ways. The PIN is the only thing that protects the account once the number goes back into the pool and reaches someone else. But forget it yourself and you are looking at a seven-day wait: after several wrong attempts the account locks for a week, after which the number can be registered again, this time without a PIN.

Which country to pick
Signal filters the origin of a number harder than most services: carrier-issued numbers pass, VoIP-platform numbers are rejected or pushed towards call verification. The catalogue shows it — no destination is carried by more than six providers of ten, where Telegram and WhatsApp routinely sit at eight or nine. There is less slack for a retry here, so the bottom of the price range is an especially poor place to shop.

What happens once the number returns to the pool
Signal keeps working as long as you do not sign out. But registering again — on a new phone, after a reinstall — needs a code on that same number, and there will not be one. Two things worth doing immediately:
- Set the PIN. Without it, the person who gets the number next can register Signal in your place.
- Move the account to a permanent number through "Change Phone Number" while you are still signed in. Chats, groups and profile survive, but it only works on the same phone.
In short
- SMS only: the call-back option cannot reach a one-time number.
- Set the PIN immediately — otherwise the recycled number hands your account to someone else.
- A forgotten PIN means a seven-day wait, and it cannot be recovered.
